Gelersen-Gorersen Castle & Kish Hiking Excursion

Perched high on the sheer cliffs of Mount Karatapa in the Sheki region, Gelersen-Gorersen ("Come and See") is one of the most historically evocative mountain strongholds in the Greater Caucasus. Situated above the Kish River valley, this medieval citadel gained legendary status in 1744 when Haji Chalabi, the ruler of the Sheki Khanate, fortified himself within its walls against the invading army of Nadir Shah, the Persian monarch. When summoned to surrender, Chalabi famously responded with the defiance that gave the fortress its name: "Gelersen-Gorersen"—"Come and see!" Unable to breach the natural cliffs and sheer promontories protecting the site, the Persian forces ultimately retreated, cementing the fortress in regional folklore.

Today, the trek to Gelersen-Gorersen combines dense forest hiking, historical ruins, and the ancient cultural heritage of Kish village.

Detailed Step-by-Step Itinerary

Phase 1: Cultural Prelude in Kish Village

The excursion begins in the stone-paved village of Kish, located just 5 kilometers north of Sheki city center. Before heading into the forest, hikers explore the famous Church of Kish (Church of Saint Elishe).

Ancient Heritage: According to medieval Caucasian Albanian chronicles, this sanctuary was founded in the 1st century AD by St. Elishe, making it one of the oldest Christian sites in the Caucasus.

Archaeological Significance: Excavations supported by the late Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl revealed ancient pagan foundations beneath the current 12th-century stone structure dating back thousands of years. Visitors can view preserved ancient burial vaults beneath the church floor.

Phase 2: The Riverbank & Forest Ascent

Leaving Kish village behind, the trail follows the rocky bed and banks of the Kish River (Kish Chay).

Terrain: The path transitions from unpaved dirt roads into shaded forest paths winding beneath dense canopies of oak, hornbeam, and beech trees.

River Navigation: Depending on the season and water levels, the route crosses dry stone riverbeds and small mountain streams.

Scenery: As you penetrate deeper into the valley, the high peaks of the Greater Caucasus rise dramatically on either side, providing natural shade even during warm summer afternoons.

Phase 3: Scrambling to the Stronghold

The final approach to the fortress requires a steep, off-trail scramble up a narrow mountain promontory jutting out over the gorge.

The Scramble: Hikers navigate a steep incline where tree roots and exposed rocks serve as natural handholds. This sheer, defensible terrain reveals why ancient armies failed to capture the fortress.

Exploring the Ruins: Upon reaching the stone entrance gates, the remains of the upper keep, stone storage pits, defensible parapets, and overgrown curtain walls emerge from the forest.

Panoramas: The high ridge offers sweeping 360-degree views across the Kish River canyon, the surrounding forest canopy, and the distant peaks along the Dagestan border corridor.

Phase 4: Descent & Sheki Culinary Finale

After exploring the ruins and enjoying a summit rest, hikers descend along the same forest path back to Kish village. The day concludes with an authentic Sheki feast at a traditional local restaurant:

Sheki Piti: A famous regional dish consisting of lamb, chickpeas, chestnuts, and tail fat slow-cooked in individual clay pots (dozah). It is served in two stages: first pouring the rich broth over torn bread, followed by mashing the meat and chickpeas.

Sheki Pakhlava: A delicate, crispy dessert made from layered rice-flour net sheets (rishta), chopped nuts, cardamom, and saffron syrup, paired with fresh mountain herbal tea.
