Route: Basqal – Sulut – Lahij and Back
This is one of the most scenic hiking routes in Azerbaijan. The hike starts in Basqal village, from where we ascend approximately 7 kilometers toward Sulut village. Sulut is home to several historical attractions, including Buzkhana, an ancient ice house, and the remains of historical buildings associated with the region's rulers. The area also offers beautiful forests, rivers, and views of Fit Mountain.
The hiking route connecting Basqal, Sulut, and Lahij offers a fascinating combination of mountain scenery, cultural heritage, and traditional village life in the Greater Caucasus. The route passes through the beautiful landscapes of the Ismayilli region and provides opportunities to explore historic settlements, forests, rivers, and mountain trails. Official tourism information also highlights historic hiking routes and trails in the Basqal, Sulut, and Lahij area.
Basqal Village and the Start of the Hike
The journey begins in the historic village of Basqal, known for its traditional silk-weaving heritage. The village is particularly famous for producing the traditional Azerbaijani silk headscarf known as the kelaghayi. Its cobblestone streets, historic buildings, mosques, and traditional craft workshops provide an interesting introduction to the region's cultural heritage.
From Basqal, the trail ascends through forested landscapes toward Sulut. The route passes through peaceful mountain scenery and offers opportunities to enjoy the fresh air, rivers, and natural surroundings.
Sulut and Fit Mountain
Sulut is a historic mountain village in the Ismayilli region. The surrounding area is known for its historical monuments, forest trails, mountain landscapes, and ancient settlements.
One of the highlights of the area is Buzkhana, an ancient underground ice house that was traditionally used to keep food and beverages cool during the warmer months.
Another important attraction is Fit Mountain, which rises to approximately 1,810 meters above sea level. The Fit Mountain trail offers impressive views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Hiking routes in the Sulut area also connect visitors with historical sites such as Fit Fortress and Girkhotaq.
Continuing Towards Lahij
After exploring Sulut and the surrounding mountain areas, the journey continues toward Lahij, one of Azerbaijan's best-known historic mountain settlements.
Lahij is famous for its traditional stone houses, narrow cobbled streets, historic buildings, and centuries-old craftsmanship. The village is particularly well known for its copperware and traditional metalworking. Visitors can explore local workshops where skilled craftsmen continue to produce handmade copper items using traditional techniques.
The combination of mountain landscapes, historical monuments, traditional crafts, and local hospitality makes the Basqal–Sulut–Lahij route a memorable experience for active travelers.
