Yashil Bazaar and Heydar Aliyev Cultural Complex
Azerbaijan has an excellent geographical location, with 9 of the 11 existing climatic zones. This is why the fertile land of Azerbaijan produces a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other agricultural products. Today, we will visit the oriental market known as "Yashil Bazaar."
Located a little further from the city center, Yashil Bazaar, which means "Green Bazaar" in Azerbaijani, is Baku's largest food bazaar. It is packed with fresh and locally produced fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, nuts and dried fruits, juices, compotes, and jams, as well as local delicacies such as caviar and saffron.
Strolling from one row to another allows you to experience a world of flavors and aromas from different parts of the country. It is one of the most popular food-shopping destinations among Baku locals. Vendors are usually happy to assist you and let you sample products before buying. Don't be afraid to bargain over prices and get ready to experience the lively atmosphere of an Eastern bazaar.
This will be followed by a visit to the cultural complex named after the national leader of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev. The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre includes an auditorium (Congress Centre), a museum, exhibition halls, and administrative offices. The project was designed in 2007 by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid. In 2014, the building was recognized as the world's best building and received the prestigious Design of the Year Award.
The construction of the building was featured in an episode of the "Build It Bigger" program on the Discovery and Science Channel, which focused on some of the world's most ambitious engineering projects and architectural masterpieces. Today, the Heydar Aliyev Centre is considered one of the symbols of modern Baku.
Designed by the renowned Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, the striking Heydar Aliyev Centre opened in 2012. Its astonishing curved, wave-like shape and innovative use of space have transformed it into an icon of modern Azerbaijan. In 2014, the stunning structure, which appears to have no straight lines, won the London Design Museum's prestigious Design of the Year Award.
The building aims to be a welcoming place for everyone, regardless of gender, race, or origin, bringing people together through shared ideas. In addition to its extraordinary appearance, it is also a world-class exhibition and museum complex featuring a wide range of permanent and temporary exhibitions showcasing local and international art and culture.
Among the permanent collections is a museum exploring the life and legacy of Azerbaijan's national leader, Heydar Aliyev; a Mini Azerbaijan exhibition displaying miniature versions of the country's key landmarks; and a unique collection of classic cars.
In addition, the Centre features a stylish café and a state-of-the-art auditorium that hosts international conferences and events. The surrounding area is also a large green park where, during the warmer months, visitors can walk, relax, and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
